Baby Crib Ideas
Every expectant mother who is searching for the perfect baby crib is filled with all the hopes and dreams she has for her child. She wants the sleeping space that is safe, comfortable, stylish, and filled with the creature comforts that would occupy the musings of a newborn.
A baby crib mattress should be one that is firm enough to support the soft and still shifting bones of a newborn. Mattresses that are too soft tend to restrict the movement of the baby and sometimes might present a smothering hazard. Slightly bouncy mattresses are the best choice.
Many new parents are also opting for natural or organic mattresses that do not contain harmful chemicals. These mattresses are made from materials like cotton, bamboo, and natural latex. They are biodegradable and allergy resistant. Some of the padding and covers for organic mattresses are made from hypoallergenic wool, making it easy for infants who might be prone to allergic reactions to sleep without fret.
In addition to the allergy considerations, mattresses for baby cribs should be water proof and breathable. Breathable mattresses refer to those whose open cell structure allows air to circulate freely in and out of the mattress. Those mattresses that are not breathable tend to hold cold air in winter, making babies likely to catch colds and other illnesses.
Safety must also be a primary concern in the baby crib-bedding arena. One of the age old controversies among baby crib experts and the parents of newborns is the idea that bumper pads used with baby crib furniture like cribs and bassinets is not safe. Many parents might choose bumper pads based on cute images on the fabric or a perfect match to a pre-determined color scheme. While these things matter, the safety of the child must also be a major factor in the final choice of bedding.
Organizations like the Consumer Product Safety Commission have taken the position that padding that is pillow-like presents a hazard and those parents should consider thin padding instead. Organizations opposing thick bumper pads link the presence of the material to many crib deaths. Further research revealed that this position has merit.
Deaths caused by padding in a baby crib were found to have happened in three different ways. The face of the baby came in close contact with the padding and caused asphyxiation, the head of the baby became wedged between the padding and another surface and the baby could not break free to avoid asphyxiation, or ribbons or other materials attached to the padding wrapped around the neck of the baby and caused the baby to strangle.
The conclusion of most studies is that baby crib padding may prevent infants from being stuck in the railing of a crib, but the other hazards the padding present are a much graver danger.
A baby crib can be beautified to create the look or design style that new parents want to achieve, but safety should always be a primary concern. After choosing a color scheme or nursery pattern, parents should always check to make sure their choices are safe choices.
