Choosing a safe and stylish baby crib
A baby crib is the most important piece in baby crib furniture. Most babies remain in the bassinet only for the first few weeks and then eventually move over to a baby crib. With the growing need of cribs, there are also a number of varieties of cribs available. On one hand, having so many options makes it easy for parents to choose from but on the other hand with so many types of cribs around, it becomes a little difficult to ascertain the safety aspects of baby cribs.
There are many types of baby cribs available – the sleigh baby cribs, convertible baby cribs, mini, and rocking cribs are just a few to name. The most popular baby crib is the one that converts to a toddler bed as the baby grows. It is popular than other models because of the return on money invested. As a baby, the crib serves the purpose and when the baby becomes a toddler, there is no need to spend additional money to buy a toddler bed. Some of the convertible cribs are designed to be attached to the bed of the parents too.
There are also baby cribs that have the feature of rocking. This is beneficial since it will put the baby to sleep as well. Parents, who are wary about putting a habit to the child, generally do not prefer the rocking baby crib. Whichever baby crib one might select, there certain safety factors that need to be kept in mind. For the safety of your child, it is advisable not to buy a used baby crib unless you are convinced that all parts are in place. Even if some seemingly unimportant part is missing, never use the crib since it might put the baby in danger.
All the slats of a baby crib should be placed no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. The baby crib mattress has to fit the crib snugly. The mattress should be selected in such a manner that there is no more than a finger width of space between the mattress and the side of the crib. All screws should be tightly secured and the corner posts should not be higher than 1/16th of an inch.
Other safety considerations when buying a baby crib will include how securely the drop side latches on. It should be secure enough so that the baby cannot accidentally unlatch it. Most parents have a fancy for stuffed animal toys. Be sure not to stuff the baby crib with too many blankets or stuffed animal toys since these pose the risk of suffocation. The location of the baby crib also should be such that there is no hanging or other attractive items around. As the baby grows, it has a desire to pull items and this might lead to a fall.
With the many varieties and models of baby cribs available, it is no daunting task for parents to choose a baby crib. By paying attention to the safety features on your crib site, one can buy a stylish yet safe baby crib for the child.
