Old fasionedThere is nothing in the world more joyful than the arrival of a new baby. Second to this for the parents to be, and most especially Mom, is the creation of the nursery. While there have always been a number of choices for nursery themes, decorations and bedding, there has not been much of a choice a baby crib. Luckily, today’s expectant parents have a whole host of hot choices, everything from traditionally ornate to minimalist hipster. Let us look at the best and the brightest trends in baby cribs.

Round cribs are all the rage and they certainly make a dramatic statement when entering a nursery, especially if placed as the room’s centerpiece. Baby gets the entire view of his or her surroundings and some models actually feature little doors that open to ease baby into the crib instead of reaching over the rails. On the downside, round cribs are pricey, it is hard for find one for less than $500 and once baby reaches about 35 inches, it will be time to move on to a toddler bed.

Modeled after adult bedroom furnishings, sleigh cribs are also a relatively new entry into the nursery field. Sleigh cribs have an elegant appearance and are generally available in the rich dark woods of adult versions. Curves and arches mark the sleigh look and most of these cribs come equipped with a conversion kit, making it easy to turn them into toddler beds when baby inevitably begins to want to climb over the railings.

A variation on the sleigh theme is found in a crib called Arm’s Reach Sleigh Bed Bassinet. This is a perfect compromise crib for those parents who like the idea of actually sleeping with their baby, the old family bed concept. The Arm’s Reach model actually allows the baby’s sleep area to attach to the mattress of the parent’s bed. Baby is still securely surrounded by crib railings on the three other sides. This one is a real winner for a nursing Mom, no more need to stumble in the dark to baby’s room.

For newborns, a bassinet in a great convenience especially in a home with more than one level. The bassinet can be kept in the downstairs living areas so that the baby is a part of the family’s rituals, even while sleeping for most of the day in the first few weeks. Several models of bassinets now come on rockers so that two of baby’s favorite things are brought together, the snuggling feel of the basket and the swinging motion of the rocker. Most of these newer rocker bassinettes begin in the $400-500 range.

Lest one think that there is no such thing as a reasonably priced crib anymore, enter two well know names, Graco and IKEA. Graco has a great convertible crib line manufactured by La Jobi, a known nursery furniture manufacturer. The Ashleigh model has an elegant look and not only converts to toddler, but also can go all of the way to an adult size day bed. The price is the real winner, about $170. Minimalist furniture leaders IKEA offer the Gulliver crib, an extremely sleek, bordering on stark, modern style crib that comes in birch or white and is just under $100.
